Cupboard

Curation, Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Audio-Visual Interaction, Immersive Experience

Introduction

Technologies Used

Cupboard involved creating a surreal installation art space in a small room, evoking a feeling of being watched. This space featured dynamic electronic eyes, sculptures, wall paintings, and lighting design, combining digital art, sculpture, painting, and lighting to create an unsettling environment.

In this project, I was responsible for curating, spatial design, and the design and programming of the dynamic electronic eye. I used computer graphics to create a digital eye and programmed it to move dynamically with music, enhancing the ambiance of the space.

Description

The cupboard is small, cut off, strange. You can't escape the feeling that you're being watched. There are eyes everywhere, hanging from the ceiling, in the walls, one of them is bright and even moving. There are creatures in there with you. You know you are being watched. You have no idea what's going on and you were not the only one. There are writings across the floor, clearly studying the room, but you can't make anything out from them. Clearly someone has been here before.

What happened to them? Where are they now? What will happen to you?

My role and contribution

Part 1: Processing Coding

Part 2: AI Generative Music

Group Collaboration Process

We are students from five branches of fine arts.  Our collaboration seamlessly integrated each specialization, creating a cohesive and immersive art exhibition that showcased our diverse skills and creative synergy.

Who we are

Holly – photography: surrealism, surveillance

Claudia – painting: world building, surveillance

Zhanlan – computational arts: AI generation, creative coding

Emily – painting: liminal space

Mik – sculpture: world building, childhood, surrealism

How we collabrate

Zhanlan, me, specializing in computational arts, handled curation, spatial design, and digital eye motion design with programming.

Holly, in photography, created an eyeball sculpture and designed the exhibition concept.

Claudia, focusing on painting, contributed to the spatial arrangement design.

Emily, also in painting, crafted murals within the space. Mik, a sculpture major, managed the lighting design.

Reflection

What we discoverd as a group?

I think,
One person can do art very efficiently, a group of people can do art less efficiently but can do more.If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Claudia thinks,
Creating art collaboratively allows you to work on projects that you could not complete or even generate on your own.

Holly thinks,
Collaboration opens up an ability to involve mediums you could not execute well by yourself, however, forces you to work with ideas and limitations you usually would not have to contend with.
Mik thinks,
Working with a group allows an installation to become more multifaceted. As different ideas come together to form one all-encompassing atmosphere

Emily thinks,
I have learnt that by working in collaboration with other artists it can widen your ideas and creative opportunities as you have input from many different people it helps you to broaden your ideas whether these are similar to yours or not and by brainstorming together you can learn of new artists, books or events which are relevant to your practice.
